Multiple Scholarships granted and outstanding Teachers awarded
Ten (10) scholarships based on financial need and outstanding academic merits were awarded to students at Cornwall College while two (2) teachers were also awarded for excellence in the classroom by the Class of 88 at the Cornwall College Chapel on Wednesday October 20th 2021.
The scholarships and awards valued at $1.1 million were presented in keeping with the mandate of CC 88 incorporated a nonprofit organization formed by Cornwall College Class of 1988 and incorporated in Jamaica and Florida.
The beneficiary students are Alexander Waite, Anthony Brackett, Anthonyo Calvin, Antione Mitchell, Asher Smith, Curtis Clennon, Keshawn McGrath, Layandre Akoto and Xavier McFarlane.
In fulfillment of the group’s mandate to promote excellence in the field of science the class of 88 Dr. Karl M. Dhana Scholarship for Excellence in the Sciences award was presented to Alton Roberts for the 2021-2022 academic year. He is the 4th recipient of this annual award.
The “Dothnie Maud Gordon Outstanding Teacher Award” named in honor of Mr. Michael Gordon’s 93 year-old mother were presented to Mr. Malik Ewan and Mr. Gregory Taylor. For this award students were encouraged to nominate an outstanding teacher and vote on their performance in the areas of Creativity, Knowledge and Patience in the classroom.
Speaking at the scholarship award ceremony CC88 representative Mr. Rohan Matheson, urged the students to focus on their purpose and to emulate others who came before them who took the schools motto to heart which says (Disce Aut Discede) ‘Learn or Leave’ and they came learned and left empowered. Mr. Hayden Marks (CC88 member) was on hand to coordinate the ceremony and present the scholarships on behalf of CC88.
Responding on behalf of scholarship recipients, Deputy Head Boy Antione Mitchell says the receipt of the scholarships would ensure that their academic pursuits would not be stifled because of lack of resources.
